Richard Verschoor has completed a switch from Trident to Van Amersfoort Racing for 2023 FIA F2 season.
Verschoor first graduated to F2 in 2021 with MP Motorsport and proceeded to clinch victory in the second Sprint Race at Silverstone, en-route to 11th in the driver standings despite a late-season switch to Charouz after a budget issue.
The 22 year-old Dutchman this season moved to Trident where he won the season-opening Sprint Race in Bahrain, as he eventually finished 12th overall in the driver standings after he was stripped of victory in the Austrian Feature Race due to a fuel sample irregularity.
Next season will see Verschoor change teams once again as he now joins VAR after enjoying a positive post-season test for the Dutch team in Abu Dhabi last month.
Speaking about his decision to move to VAR, Verschoor commented: “I am extremely excited to return to the F2 grid again in 2023 and I am really happy to do so with Van Amersfoort Racing.”
Next season will be VAR’s second F2 campaign after having replaced HWA Racelab at end of 2021, but Verschoor feels “very confident” that he and the team can do well in 2023 after having both “grown a lot during last year in F2,” individually.
Verschoor pointed to his form for VAR in the post-season test as confidence in their potential to fight for wins, as he continued: “For me, testing with VAR during the post-season test at Abu Dhabi instantly confirmed their extreme determination to further grow, and that suits my attitude very well!
“It will be an exciting year and I especially look forward to racing in Melbourne, not to mention Zandvoort. I’m ready for another year of F2 excitement!”
VAR CEO, Rob Niessink, added that it is “special” for the Dutch team to sign a compatriot as a driver for next season
Niessink went on to describe 2022 as “a huge learning streak,” from which they can build upon next season and beyond, as he stated that Verschoor will bring “valuable F2 experience” plus “his raw talent and race craft,” to help VAR make further progress in 2023.
Verschoor will be replaced at Trident by Clement Novalak who confirmed his switch to the Italian team last month, having previously raced for Trident in F3.
