A major dam in southern Ukraine has been damaged, allowing large amounts of water to flow out of a reservoir and prompting officials to order residents of surrounding areas to evacuate. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Both Russia and Ukraine have previously accused each other of plotting to destroy the dam, without providing evidence.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is holding an emergency meeting of the National Security Council to discuss what officials are describing as an explosion at the dam, which controls the flow of water to dozens of settlements and is the source for a crucial canal that delivers water south to Crimea. Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson regional military administration, said the water will reach “critical levels” within five hours, urging residents to prepare to evacuate immediately.
