Paris (dpa) – At a summit meeting on the global financial system, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed the importance of the joint responsibility to be taken on by states in the fight against hunger and poverty as well as climate change. “A lot of countries face major challenges, especially those in the Global South. There are numerous existing factors that present a challenge in terms of growth and the fight against hunger and poverty, and then in addition to this there is the need to take measures to tackle man-made climate change,” said Scholz in Paris on Friday. He added that it was crucial to recognise this shared responsibility and discuss how it could be achieved.
Scholz insisted on ensuring that development opportunities were viable. As such, he said, it was important to pursue cooperation through so-called partnerships for a just energy transition in the fight against climate change. In addition, he noted, progress had to be made on the issue of how to ensure that raw materials were initially processed locally.
At the summit in Paris on Thursday and Friday, representatives of about 100 states, international organisations and development banks met to discuss the global financial architecture and a solidarity-based financial system dedicated to climate action and poverty reduction.
