Sunderland have signed forward, Joe Gelhardt on loan from Leeds United until end of 2022-23 season.
Gelhardt’s loan move to Sunderland comes as the 20 year-old looks for regular game time, having failed to score in 18 first-team appearances in all competition for Leeds this season despite providing two assists.
Leeds added that this move for Gelhardt has been sanctioned following Rodrigo’s form coupled with return of Patrick Bamford and the arrival of Georginio Rutter, which has dropped the youngster down the pecking order.
The Yorkshire-based club however moved to assure supporters that Gelhardt’s loan spell isn’t a step towards a permanent exit, as they iterated that Gelhardt ‘very much remains part of the club’s long-term plans.’
Speaking about his loan move to Sunderland, Gelhardt commented: “I know how big the Club is and I’m really looking forward to meeting the lads and trying to help. I spoke with the Head Coach and the playing style seemed a perfect fit for me.”
Gelhardt also revealed that he has monitored Sunderland’s progress this season on TV, as he added: “I’ve watched Sunderland on the TV this season and seen some positive, attacking football and I can’t wait to get involved.”
Sunderland manager, Tony Mowbray meanwhile paid tribute to his players and staff for progressing the Black Cats in their first season back in the Championship, particularly to the extent that it is “testatement” that Gelhardt believes “Sunderland was the best move for him.”
Gelhardt boasts 41 appearances in all competitions for Leeds with two goals and five assists since his senior debut in September 2021, which Mowbray believes will make Gelhardt “a really exciting” player who suits Sunderland’s playing style and strengthens the forward selection.
On what fans can expect from Gelhardt, Mowbray said: “I’m sure the fans can’t wait to see him in action and we are looking forward to supporting his development.”
Gelhardt could make his debut for Sunderland away at Millwall on Saturday 4 February in a 3pm GMT kick-off, as the Black Cats continue their push for the Championship Play-Offs.
