The survival of the Morrison government is at stake amid the Coalition’s negotiations over a net zero climate deal, according to The Australian’s Editor-at-Large Paul Kelly.
It comes as the Nationals are expected to inform the Prime Minister of their decision on net zero on Sunday.
Mr Kelly remarked that the “broad contours” of the deal – to have net zero by 2050 with no greater increase to the emissions reduction target by 2030 – is an “agonising political compromise”.
“There are two issues here,” Mr Kelly told Sky News Australia.
“At stake is the survival of the Morrison government – whether it can make this policy transition.
“And related to this is whether the Coalition parties can change policy on climate change or they are destroying themselves internally as they’ve done so many times in the past.”
