A US court has heard that the man suspected of creating the bomb that brought down Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie in 1988, killing 270 people, will not be put to death
On Monday, Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir Al-Marimi showed up in a Washington, D.C., federal court.
He is accused of three offences, including two counts of destroying an aeroplane that caused death and another case of destroying a vehicle that caused death.
Each offence carries a potential term of up to life in prison, the death penalty, or a maximum fine of $250,000.
However, US prosecutors informed the court that they would not seek the death punishment because at the time of the bombing, it was not constitutionally permitted.
The trial continues.
