Gurugram: Three unidentified suspects were booked for allegedly stealing $1,800 from a Kenyan national and his brother near Koyal Vihar in Sector 52 when they were returning to their guesthouse on Sunday night, police said.
Police said the suspects, who are yet to be arrested, had impersonated themselves as police officers and stopped the brothers for frisking.
Police said that Suleiman Abdullahi and his brother Abdihakim Abdullahi had landed in India on January 1 and reached Gurugram for surgeries at a private hospital in Sector 52.
According to investigators, the suspects were waiting alongside a car on the service road near the guesthouse where the two brothers were staying. They stopped the duo for frisking after identifying themselves as police officers. Police said that they took a bag from Suleiman and gave it to another suspect sitting in the car on the pretext of checking it.
Police said that the suspect took $1800 (approximately ₹1.48 lakh) from the bag and returned it to the victims. They immediately left the spot after which the brothers realised that the suspects had stolen their cash.
A senior police official said that both the brothers had undergone surgery for fistula on January 3 and were recuperating. “They are required to visit the hospital for more checkups,” he said.
An FIR was registered against the unidentified suspects under Section 379 (theft), 419 (cheating by personation) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Sector 53 police station on Sunday night, said police.
Subhash Boken, public relations officer of Gurugram police, said that an investigation is underway to ascertain the identity of the suspects and arrest them at the earliest.
