United Way has scheduled five free food distributions in June in the New London area.
According to a news release from United Way of Southeastern Connecticut, the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center is hosting food drives in Pawcatuck, Taftville, Griswold, New London and Groton.
“The sites are accessible for drive-thru or walk-up visitors. The goal is to serve 150-300 families facing hunger and food insecurity in our community at each site,” the news release reads. “Anyone in need of food is welcome to attend and no paperwork is necessary. Guests are asked to remain in their car and open their trunk or have their backseat door unlocked where volunteers can place the food. Items distributed include protein, fresh produce, and nonperishable food items.”
The first food distribution was held Wednesday at Stonington High School. The Thames Valley Council for Community Action, or TVCCA, was on site to offer additional resources, information and support.
Other food distributions will be held:
Wednesday, June 8, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Wequonnoc Elementary School, 155 Providence St., Taftville. Generations Family Health Center, Madonna Place and Diabetic & Hypertension Relief also will be there.
Thursday, June 16, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., at Griswold High School, 267 Slater Ave., Griswold. TVCCA, Uncas Health District, Madonna Place and UCFS Healthcare also will be on site.
Wednesday, June 22, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., a food distribution will be held at Jennings Elementary School, 50 Mercer St. in New London. Madonna Place, TVCCA and UCFS Healthcare representatives will be in attendance.
Friday, June 24, from 12:30 to 2 p.m., at St. John’s Christian Church, 346 Shennecossett Road, Groton, with the help of the TVCCA.
The Moran Food Center provided about 3.1 million meals last year through its network of emergency food programs in New London County and its mobile pantry.
