As the international break ends with England qualifying for the Euros in the summer, let’s look even further ahead of that and towards hopefully, the end of Gareth Southgate’s reign as England boss.
I don’t think he’s done bad at all by the way, and I don’t think he’s a terrible manager at all – he’s got another good chance of winning a major trophy too. But what I do fully believe is that this is a golden generation of English talent, and if we had a bolder and better manager, we would have already won our first major tournament since 1966, and as well as that, we would soon be winning another one.
In fact, I think we have the player talent pool in this country now to dominate international football for a chunk of time, IF we had the right manager.
Rumours are that Southgate will be off after the Euros and the FA would be keen to speak to Jose Mourinho, amongst many others, in view to taking the role. Mourinho looks like he will be leaving Roma around the same time, so it’s not impossible for that to come to fruition.
I’ve also earmarked Frank Lampard as being one the FA will want to speak to, that’s if he hasn’t taken or found a domestic role by then. I just think the FA would at least want to speak with him about the role, and I certainly think he would be keen.
I might be in the minority here, but I actually think Lampard as England manager might suit both parties. He’s struggled being a day-to-day domestic manager, but as England manager with it being more part-time, I think he would be better. Besides, all this England team really needs is someone to motivate them, and someone to pick the best and right lineup.
If Lampard was England manager, I could see him using this lineup as his preferred:
Or at least something similar to this with one DM and two 8s.
Phil Foden can play as an 8 and although this is incredibly attacking, I genuinely think this is how this England team should pretty much be setting up and look to always boss games and play on the front foot. There is no reason why this group cannot do that if they are in the right lineup.
Although, I just realised I forgot about Mason Mount. Of course Lampard would start Mase!
I’m really not certain what kind of lineup Jose Mourinho would go for, it’s hard to say. But I know it would be a much better one that what Southgate selects!
I’d certainly be here for a Mourinho managed England, I cannot lie.
I just want to fall back in love with the national team again because right now, I’ve really become detached from it, and I think that’s down to the manager and his team selections.
Of course he is getting results, I mean, I genuinely think I would get results if you gave me the squad that he has to pick from.
I think the FA will really push for someone like Eddie Howe, but surely he isn’t going anywhere other than where he is right now?
I’d be pretty excited if Jose came in to manage England, I really would. I feel like it would be the natural next step for him as well.
Anyways, I’ll always be England till I die, but I’m club football over national football and I can’t ever see that changing.
