On Tuesday, 28 May, European Union members Ireland and Spain, and EU trading partner Norway, will formally recognise Palestine as a state, they announced on Wednesday, elevating it to the same diplomatic status as other countries.
But Israel’s staunchest allies, the US and Germany, both said their positions remained unchanged, which will prevent Palestine from full recognition at major international institutions such as the United Nations.
The US has no issue with countries deciding to recognise a Palestinian state, said White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, but the US maintains that direct negotiation between Palestinians and Israel is the best path forward.
