Caroline Bay’s New Year’s Eve celebrations went off without a hitch, with an amazing fireworks display, a busy carnival, and a well-behaved crowd.
About 10,000 people came to celebrate New Year’s Eve day at Caroline Bay, the Caroline Bay Carnival Association’s secretary Kevin Fahey said..
“It was really steady the whole day, in previous years there is a bit of a drop-off where people go home and come back for the fireworks, but it seemed like a lot of people were here throughout the day,” Fahey said.
The crowd was very well-behaved, everyone supported the carnival, and there was a great run with the weather, he said.

“I think people have not been able to do things the past couple of years, so now they can go out, people were really excited to have this [the Carnival] to go to,” he said.
Fahey said the fire works display was “incredible” and it was great to have such a good show for the public.
“A well done goes to the pyrotechnic volunteers who did the display, they did a fantastic job,” he said.
“There was a good boom or two in there.”

Thousands of spectators were at Caroline Bay in Timaru for the annual New Year’s Eve carnival and fireworks display.
Fahey said he received comments from people after the fireworks show that it was better than the main centres, such as Auckland.
“That was a very cool thing to hear, that Timaru pulled a great display off,” he said.
Fahey said the cost of the fire works display had been more than previous years for the same scale of show.
“We did get caught with a big price jump from the fireworks we bought from overseas, but we wanted to make sure it was to the same scale as previous years, and it did not disappoint,” he said.
“The fireworks were the icing on the cake for the day.”
Fahey said the celebration season is not over with more than a week left of the carnival, and so there is still time to show support before the event wraps up for the year.
Band Zed will perform at 7pm on January 4, and Capitol City at 2pm on the final day of the carnival, on December 8.
