Turkey lowered gas prices by 42.73 percent for religious sites, places of worship, including mosques, churches and synagogues. The decision came into force on January 1, 2023. There will also be a reduction for industrial consumption.
The move was announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on December 31 on Twitter.
Erdogan announced that gas prices would be reduced by 42.73 percent for all “places of pilgrimage.”
Erdogan also announced that gas prices will be cut between 13.10-25.11 percent for industrial consumption, while the prices of gas used for electricity generation will be cut by 12.73 percent.
Electricity prices for industrial needs will also be reduced by 16 percent.
The move came after Russia delayed a $20 billion payment to state gas importer and distributor BOTAŞ (Oil Pipeline Corporation of Turkey), HaberTürk reported.
Turkey meets 40-45 percent of its natural gas needs from Russia. The rest are imported from countries such as Iran, Libya and the USA.
