Twitter users have long asked for the ability to edit Tweets, and the company has found a way without letting them erase history.
Twitter will begin letting some of its users edit their tweets in the “coming weeks”, the social media firm has announced.
The frequently-requested feature will give people the ability to fix embarrassing typos or moderate opinions that they may have fired-off from the hip and then regretted.
But Twitter won’t be giving its users the ability to erase history.
It explained that edited Tweets would appear with an icon, timestamp and a label that would make it clear that Tweets had been edited and when.

“Tapping the label will take viewers to ‘edit history’, which includes past versions of the Tweet for context,” it said.
Tweets will be able to be edited “a few times”, but only up to 30 minutes after they are first posted.
Twitter will initially only make the feature available to those who have signed up to its premium Twitter Blue service, which costs $6.99 a month in New Zealand and which is only available here and in Australia, Canada and the US.
It indicated one of those countries would be used as the initial testbed for the Edit Tweet feature, but would not immediately confirm which one.
Internet companies have sometimes used New Zealand to try out new features, given its small population, technological literacy and isolated geography.
“Like any new feature, we’re intentionally testing ‘Edit Tweet’ with a smaller group to help us incorporate feedback while identifying and resolving potential issues, including how people might misuse this,” Twitter said in a statement.
“Since this is our most-requested feature, we want to get it right.”
If people re-tweeted a Tweet that was later edited, the original version would still display, but with a label that showed a new version of the Tweet was available.
