Paramedics work to free a young girl entrapped after a sandcastle collapsed on them in at Salt Rock beach.
Two people were rescued on Tuesday after they dug a two-metre deep hole on a beach in KwaZulu-Natal and the embankment collapsed on them.
According to Paul Herbst, the spokesperson for Medi Response KZN, the young woman and a man were buried in the sand on the beach in Salt Rock on the north coast.
The man was helped out of the sand which engulfed them, while the young woman was covered up to her neck.
“This poses a threat in respect of compartment syndrome,” he said.
Compartment syndrome happens when blood flow is restricted to a part of the body due to weight applied to the area.
This results in the build-up of lactic acid and can be fatal once the weight is removed.
Rescue crews worked for an hour to free her as advanced life support paramedics worked to stabilise her.
Both were rescued.
Note: It was earlier reported that the two were trapped by sand while building a sandcastle, when in fact they were digging a hole.
