Ukraine is trying to “stretch” Russian forces across several locations, a security expert has said.
Professor Michael Clarke, Associate Director of the University of Exeter’s Strategy and Security Institute and former Director of the Royal United Services Institute said Ukraine’s new offensive is a “big moment”.
Earlier this week Ukraine launched a new offensive in the Kherson region with Russian forced told to “run or die” by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence.
Mr Clarke added: “
After four days it is clear this is an ambitious offensive, over 160 km, in a wide arc around Kherson and Nova Kakhovka.
“The Ukrainians are trying to stretch Russian forces across several places at once, probably with the ultimate objective of threatening to surround about 20,000 Russian troops west of the Dnieper River.
“If they can do that, the Ukrainians have a good chance of forcing the Russians to abandon Kherson without having to fight for it.”
