Ukraine has called for the United Nations to exclude Russia from their Security Council as a “permanent member”.
The move would see Vladimir Putin’s government “deprived” of their power of veto, which allows them to prevent unilateral action by other members of the UN.
Ukraine suggested Russia had “illegitimately” taken the “seat of the USSR in the UN Security Council” and that, subsequently, they had used their position to block retaliation to their “wars and seizures of other countries’ territories”.
In a statement, the Ukrainian foreign ministry said: “Ukraine calls on the member states of the UN … to deprive the Russian Federation of its status as a permanent member of the UN security council and to exclude it from the UN as a whole.
“From a legal and political point of view, there can be only one conclusion: Russia is a usurper of the Soviet Union’s seat on the UN security council.”
Late on Christmas Day, Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, suggested the question of Russia’s power of veto was already being discussed by fellow nations.
Speaking during a national television marathon on Sunday, Mr Kuleba said: “These issues are not yet discussed at press conferences and in public statements by the leaders of states and governments, but at a lower level, people are already asking the question – what Russia should become like in order not to pose a threat to peace and security.”
There are fifteen members of the UN Security Council but only five permanent members, all of which have the power of veto, allowing them to block an initiative notwithstanding unilateral support from all its fellow members.
The five permanent members are China, France, the Soviet Union, now the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States.
