Rumours and speculations about the health of Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, have always surfaced. However, a recent rumour has stirred things up, making people wonder if there’s more to it than meets the eye.
According to unnamed sources, Putin’s security team rushed to his private bedroom due to unusual sounds. They supposedly found Putin on the floor, having convulsions. Allegedly, there was chaos, food and drinks spilt, and doctors trying to save the day. This news apparently caused panic among Putin’s close associates.
The Kremlin quickly dismissed these claims as a “ridiculous hoax” and assured everyone that Putin was doing fine.
This story came from a Telegram channel called “General SVR,” known for posting unverified claims about Putin’s health. The channel, which claimed to be run by ex-members of Russian intelligence, has a history of spreading doubtful information that seems to align with Russia’s interests.
James Nixey, Director of Russia-Eurasia Programs at Chatham House, suggests that the channel might be serving the Kremlin’s agenda by causing confusion. He also notes that the constant gossip about Putin’s health might be more wishful thinking than reality.
He told The Independent: “What is absolutely clear is that this particular channel has a record of putting out disinformation and that is in the service of the Russian state. It suits the Kremlin to sow confusion.”
Nixey points out that, at 71, Putin likely has access to top-notch healthcare and doesn’t lead a lifestyle as unhealthy as some of his predecessors.
He said: “It’s safe to assume he’s in reasonably good health.”
As for the identity of the people behind “General SVR,” that remains a mystery.
Dr Mark Geolotti, a historian, thinks it’s highly unlikely that someone within Putin’s inner circle is leaking information about his health. He notes that Putin’s inner circle is highly secretive, and sometimes even his whereabouts within Russia are unknown, let alone his health details.
