The Wagner Group has recruited more than 50 prisoners from colonies in the Chechen Republic to be deployed in Ukraine, potentially deepening ties between two factional groups fighting on the frontlines.
According to the information of the military intelligence of Ukraine, the Wagner Group visited correctional facilities of the Chechen Republic of the Russian Federation to recruit prisoners to fight.
Most of those chosen were convicted of political activities on fabricated cases.
The recruitment took place in the colony-settlement No. 3 of the city of Argun, as well as in the correctional colony No. 2 of the village of Chernokozovo.
According to Ukrainian officials, colony employees are already threatened with punishment for disclosing this information.
The news could bring closer Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Russian oligarch in charge of the Wagner Group, and Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, who have both been openly critical of the war effort in Ukraine.
WIth their own factions fighting in Ukraine outside of the chain of command of the Russian Armed Forces, the two leaders have routinely blamed defence minister Sergei Shoigu and Russian Army chief Valery Gerasimov for difficulties on the battlefield, calling for a more hardline and vicious approach.
