- The streets of São Lourenço de Bairro ran red on the weekend.
- Two storage tanks of wine burst at a local distillery.
- Thousands of litres of wine was diverted away from a river.
A flash flood drenched the hillside village of São Lourenço do Bairro with wine on Sunday, after an accident at a local distillery.
Residents filmed thousands of litres of wine – reportedly more than two million litres in total – rushing through the streets.
The company responsible, Destilaria Levira, said there was a crisis of over-supply of wine in Europe, which is why it had so much wine in storage.
Two of its storage tanks burst; exactly how is still the subject of investigation, but it seems that the collapse of the first tank triggered the failure of the second.
Local publication Jornal Diário de Aveiro reported that firefighters diverted the flood to keep a local river from being contaminated.
Wine demand in Europe has been muted thanks to inflation and, in previous years, coronavirus lockdowns. At the same time, Europe’s exports of wine have declined while production spiked after a good harvest.
