West Ham have signed defender, Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea in a £15m transfer deal.
Emerson’s switch to the Hammers brings his tough four-and-a-half year spell at Chelsea to a close having managed just two goals in 71 appearances, amidst struggles for game time which eventually saw him loaned out to Lyon last season where he scored once in 36 appearances.
Emerson though did enjoy success whilst at Stamford Bridge as he helped the team to 2020-21 UEFA Champions League title followed by UEFA Super Cup just months later, having previously been part of their title-winning Europa League squad two seasons earlier.
West Ham have paid an initial £13m transfer fee and will also pay £2m in add-ons taking the total fee to £15m, with Emerson having signed a four-year contract until June 2026 with option for one further year and will wear number 33 shirt.
Speaking about his decision to move across London and join West Ham, Emerson said that he is “very happy” to make the switch as he described the Hammers as “a big challenge” for him as they chase another top-seven league finish plus cup success this season.
Moyes meanwhile is “very pleased” to sign Emerson as he described the defender as “… an experienced player with a good pedigree, who has enjoyed great success at both club and international level in recent years.”
On what Emerson would add to the squad, Moyes commented: “He will give us strong competition in defensive areas and brings a winning mentality that we are looking to build here at West Ham.
“We look forward to working with Emerson and wish him all the very best in his career with us.”
Emerson will be eligible to make his debut for West Ham in Thursday’s (25 August) second leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League play-off tie away to Viborg.
The 28 year-old left-back began his career with Brazil’s Santos between 2011-14 before he joined Palermo then AS Roma on loan across 2014-15 & 15-16 seasons, with his move to the latter club eventually becoming permanent until he was sold to Chelsea in January 2018.
At international level, Emerson represented Brazil at Under-17 youth level but switched allegiance to Italy once he was given Italian citizenship in 2017, from which he has since made 27 appearances and was part of their Euro 2020 winning squad in summer 2021.
