With iOS 16.1, released on October 24, 2022, Apple introduced a new feature called Clean Energy Charging. The entirely optional feature simply seeks to reduce the environmental impact of your iPhone by charging it when the electricity sources for your area are greener (as energy sources tend the fluctuate throughout the day and year).
A support document from Apple details how it works. It’s currently only available in the U.S., but may extend to other regions in the future. When enabled, your iPhone gets a forecast of future carbon emissions for your local energy grid and tries to adjust its charging to times when there is cleaner energy production. It works together with the Optimized Battery Charging feature to learn your use and charging habits, to ensure that it never leaves you stranded without charge when you need it.
Throughout a typical day, electricity demand fluctuates, often making it necessary to increase power from on-demand sources such as natural gas power plants. Energy sources like solar and wind produce variable amounts of power depending on time of day and weather. Hydroelectric power often changes with the seasons.
But this is all predictable if you have the data. As an example, though you may plug in your iPhone at 8pm at night, perhaps your phone will detect that, based on your past usage history and the fact that it still has 27% charge, you don’t actually need to charge it yet and it would be better to wait a few hours until the gas peaker plants ramp down and most of your electricity is from hydroelectric sources.
If you don’t like this feature you can turn it off. Open Settings, select Battery, then Battery Health & Charging and turn off Clean Energy Charging.
