Unsurprisingly, American food is wholly different from cuisine in Europe and other parts of the world. Most foreign travelers to the United States would love to eat like an American, and luckily, recent explorers met in an online discussion to reveal what grocery store items are must-buys when visiting. From craft beer to ranch dressing (and everything in between), it’s easy to experience America through the lens of a grocery store visit.
1. Peanut Butter and Jelly
When visiting an American supermarket for the first time, any visitor’s first mission is to buy peanut butter, grape jelly, and a loaf of bread. Eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is an act of embracing America and everything about it; you’ll be saluting the flag and signing up for a checking account in no time! (Not really, but you get my point: PB&Js are delicious.)
2. Unique Flavored Potato Chips
Americans love junk food, so there are approximately one million flavors of potato chips in the snack food section of the grocery store. Don’t be afraid to be an adventurous eater. “There will probably be potato chip flavors you don’t see in your home country,” reveals one woman. “Don’t go crazy; I say spend $20 to sample little things. And yes, some chips may not be to your taste, but that’s all part of the culinary adventure.”
3. Frozen Pizza
I have a confession: I believe frozen pizza is arguably better than fresh pizza. The convenience of popping a pizza into the oven and enjoying it 20 minutes later is unbeatable, especially considering the taste! They’re all delicious! From Ellio’s to DiGiorno’s, shopping the frozen food aisle in an American supermarket is a pleasure.
4. Craft Beer
I’m impartial to craft beer because I worked in the industry for nearly a decade, but I’m not alone in my sentiment: American craft beer is on another level compared to European beer. From delightfully bitter West Coast IPAs to crisp lagers (and everything in between), the sheer amount of variety in the craft beer section of the grocery store will delight even the most discerning beer drinker.
5. Ranch Dressing
Full disclosure: I hate ranch dressing and think it’s gross. However, I must admit I am in the minority with this opinion. Ranch dressing is as American as apple pie! “Americans love ranch dressing and will use it on everything from salads to pizza,” confesses one man. “So if you want to experience a condiment that’s 100% authentic to America then you can’t do better than buying a bottle of ranch.”
6. Authentic Maple Syrup
Maple syrup is considered a delicacy overseas and is usually priced out of reach of most people. However, in America, it’s infinitely more affordable. “Buy maple syrup if you can,” advises one woman. “There are more American things you can buy, but this has to be the thing I saw the biggest markup on when I lived abroad.”
7. Pop-Tarts
Eating a pop tart that came out of the toaster four seconds earlier is a rite of passage for American children, so if you want an authentic U.S. experience, you owe it to yourself to buy a box of Pop-Tarts! These curious, hard pastries are fine to eat uncooked but transform into little pieces of heaven when inserted into a toaster for a few minutes. I’m not saying they’re America’s most significant culinary contribution, but they’re definitely worth a grocery store purchase.
8. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
I was shocked when I visited Europe and quickly discovered peanut butter-filled candy is basically nonexistent in most countries. “You must buy Reese’s peanut butter cups if you’re from Europe!” declares one woman. “When overseas, I ate all sorts of chocolate and even asked a shop worker why they didn’t use peanut butter in a filling, and he told me Europeans prefer hazelnut.” I’d love to witness Europeans eating a peanut butter cup for the first time!
9. Root Beer
Believe it or not, root beer doesn’t exist in Europe, and it’s one of the most recommended beverages for visitors to try while in America. The key is to serve the soda as cold as possible. A frosted mug could mean the difference between a “pretty good” sip of root beer and a vanilla-infused experience that Europeans have never encountered!
10. Cajun Seasoning
I’m one of those crazy Americans who believe Cajun food is the best cuisine in the world. Something about the cuisine’s flavor and heat is something every visitor to the U.S. should experience! I’m not alone in this thinking, either: “For something that will travel back well, I’d suggest buying something like Cajun seasoning,” reveals one New Orleans resident. I have a Polish coworker who always stocks up on Tony Chachere’s when he visits. It can be found anywhere in the United States, but if you’re traveling to southern Louisiana you’ll also find lots of local variations.”
