Wimbledon’s new and unfamiliar opposition were played away from home on Saturday, Royal Wootton Bassett, and Wimbledon’s expansive style of play gave the home team a heavy defeat.
Wimbledon scored nine tries, which came at regular intervals, and outside half Ed Morgan gave an immaculate display with his boot in making nine conversions.
The tries were spread through the team with five coming from the backs and four from the forwards, the bonus point was clinched after just 20 minutes with wing Tom Bracegirdle scoring on his debut for the first team.
Wimbledon’s scrum and line-out were dominant, leading to secure possession. The first-half tries were scored by centre Henry Pueble on five minutes, wing Brad Pinkham on 10 minutes, flanker Jake Farnworth on 15 minutes, Bracegirdle on 25 minutes and flanker David Aniebonham on the half-hour mark.
The second half saw lock Jack Cooke, the captain, score on 45 minutes followed by Pueble again on 50 minutes. Hooker Harry Scoble touched down on 60 and scrum half Alex Kerr on 70 minutes.
Wimbledon’s second team won 49-14 against Esher thirds.
The league takes a break next weekend.
Wimbledon will next take on Oxford Harlequins at home on October 15 with a 3pm kick-off.
